Fintan nodded. "I can go now. I don't own anything that I don't have on my person right now, so... why not?"
Fintan approached the horse cautiously. He'd seen someone get kicked before, and he rather preferred that it not happen to him. Getting on the horse, he found, was no problem at all. Easier than trying to climb most things, as he was actually supposed to climb on top of this one. If he could stay on it, and get it to go where he wanted... well that was another question.

(OOC : Rolled riding. You easily passed, even unskilled.)
The horse snorted uneasily, but seemed to like its new rider, choosing to munch peacefully at a tasty-looking shrub within eating distance of where it had been placed as Hairah mounted hers, somewhat awkwardly keeping her injured right arm at her side - she could use it if she had to, and even fight in a pinch, but doing so hurt and she preferred to rest it where possible.

Fintan started to ride off, making sure that Hairah was with him. He'd made the trip enough times to know where he was going, even if the ground did look a little more distant than usual this time.

Fintan was starting to find that, while riding a horse had the advantage of being somewhat less tiring than walking, and certainly far faster, it did tend to make one rather sore, and the constant jostling was starting to get to him.
"I suppose you're probably used to this sort of thing," he said. "Riding everywhere."

Hairah appeared to be ignoring him completely, her eyes trained on the bushes. "Six," she whispered, barely audible. "Two on the left, three on the right, one sneaking ahead of us. It's an ambush." Her tone was wary, but calm. She had dealt with many ambushes before - but, she had to admit, never while injured and without backup except for a thief of dubious skills. "Don't do anything yet," she whispered quickly, before he could do anything ill-advised.

Fintan gave a tiny nod, though he decided it best to pretend like he hadn't heard her.
"I mean, you're a soldier, you must ride a lot, right? So you can get to and from... soldier stuff. You ever fight on a horse? I've heard that happens, sometimes, and I've always wanted to know how it works. I've never done highway robbery, but, if it ever came to that, I always thought about what I'd do, given that I wouldn't have a horse, and my target would. I kinda thought about caltrops or something, so the horse could run, or getting rope around its legs. Or maybe just shooting it out from under the rider. It's why I hoped I'd never need to do highway robbery, I don't wanna hurt a horse. Horses never did anything to me. ... Except this one."
Fintan also really didn't want to have a horse shot out from under him, and rather wanted to be ready in case it did. As it was, he was trying to loosen his feet from the stirrups, in case it did come to a fight. No way in hell was he going to try to fight on that thing.

Hairah nodded slightly. "I've fought on a horse plenty of times. Most of what I do in the army is scouting, so... I do more normal fighting." Her tone was light and airy, as if the conversation was perfectly normal. "Fighting on a horse is harder than it sounds, by the way. I kept falling off in practice." Like Fintan, she was ready to jump off the horse - her arm was already painful, she did not fancy trying to control a horse and fight in her present condition."

Fintan nodded slightly. He got the terrible feeling that Hairah was, indeed, going to want to stand and fight. His own urge was to use the advantage of being on a mount to just flee. But they probably had something to take care of that. Caltrops, or razor wire. Something that he'd have done in their shoes. He tried to see if he could make out where the ambushers were hiding. Maybe he could get off a quick shot at one of them when they weren't expecting it, turn the tables. Of course, that depended on how Hairah wanted to play it. He wasn't an idiot, he knew the soldier knew better how to deal with this.

[OOC: failed]
All Fintan could see was trees, bushes, and the occasional squirrel - until, completely unexpectedly for Fintan and completely predictably for Hairah, the six bandits burst out of the undergrowth. All were wielding clubs, and all charged towards them. Hairah sprang off her horse in a single graceful move, drawing her sword and readying her shield before the bandits could move.
[OOC: You and Hairah get the first move because you're prepared. Hairah passed an Agility roll with flying colours, hence the grace. Guessing you want to roll Agility - just a pass, so nothing fancy but you can get off your horse and draw your sword without faceplanting. After Fintan and the bandits, the combat order is as follows: Hairah, Fintan, Bandits. This will be re-drawn every round.]

Fintan got off his horse, somewhat less gracefully, and nocked an arrow to his bowstring, looking for the best target. He wasn't at all sure how long he'd be able to continue using his bow in this situation, but he much preferred the idea of getting a few arrows in his attackers before he had to switch to his dagger.

The bandit ahead, and two of those on the right, readied crossbows. The two on the left and the third on the right charged - two at Hairah and one at Fintan, and attacked. Of these, only one of the attacks got through - but Hairah seemed to shrug off the blow, which while accurate had been weak. Hairah stabbed in return, but thanks to her weakened sword arm, her own attack barely scratched the bandit.
[OOC: Fintan's go. Two bandits on the right and one ahead, all with readied crossbows. Fintan is in melee with one (shooting out of melee = attack of opportunity, you're stuck with melee for now), and Hairah is fighting two.]

The military horses were well-trained to this sort of thing and simply walked out of the way of the direct combat - in no danger of spooking and running. The three bandits with crossbows waited, not willing to shoot and risk hitting their companions - merely content instead to wait as backup. As Fintan's shot went wild - largely thanks to the bandit whacking the bow aside with his sword as he charged up - the bandit swung his club. It smacked into Fintan's ribs with a sickening crunch that had Hairah wincing from across the battlefield. The two around her swung their clubs, but she ducked one and caught the other on her shield with no trouble.
[OOC: Next round of combat: Hairah, Bandits, Fintan]
Hairah clumsily parried with her throbbing sword arm - the bandit had been expecting (and was moving to parry) a proper blow, resulting in the weak, shaky one sliding straight through his defence and into his ribs and into his heart. As his buddy collapsed dead to the ground, the other bandit fighting her raised his club again and smacked her hard over the head with it, stunning her with the blow. The bandit fighting Fintan swung again before the shaken rogue could even begin to recover, let alone parry, and Fintan's world faded to black.
[OOC: The bandit that clobbered you was doing non-lethal damage. Fintan is now at 3 fatigue - in other words, he is fully unconscious. With no player characters here to witness events, I shall post this now, and I shall double-post to add an introduction for when you guys wake up once I've got a quick something from Prof. Cinders. She is now a full member of this roleplay.]

When Fintan awoke, he was in a very dark dungeon, a crude cellar roughly dug into the ground and covered by stone foundations. One pathetic candle stunk as it burned, barely providing enough light to see by. Although his injuries had basically healed, they had left large painful bruises that would persist for some time to come - although not hinder his movements greatly. What was hindering his movements, of course, was the shackles that tightly bound his hands behind his back. The chain was long enough to allow him to explore the tiny cellar - so, not very long at all, really. What made it even more cramped was the two unconscious figures he was sharing it with - Hairah beside him, and, slumped against the opposite wall, an unknown woman.
[OOC: That's your character, Cinders! Feel free to wake up in the same condition as Fintan at your leisure. Neither of you have ANY of your belongings, you've been very well searched.]

Fintan's first instinct was to cradle his aching head in his hands, but was rather immediately stopped by his shackles.
His second instinct was to check for his boots. He was very disappointed to find they had been taken. His hands might have been bound, but with three people about, it wouldn't be impossible for someone to have fished the lockpick out of his boot and handed it to him so he could undo someone else's cuffs and walk them through getting his open. But the sort of people who ambush, club, and chain random travelers probably knew enough to expect that.
Oddly nice of them to leave a candle though, which made Fintan immediately suspicious. He nudged Hairah gently with a shoulder, not wanting to deal with an unknown agent quiet yet if he could help it.

The woman opposite Fintan stirred, her arms briefly spasming against the unexpected bonds. Cracking an eyelid, she glared against the darkness at her new-found companions, and said "Hrrgrrhng," rather groggily. Frowning at her excellent self-introduction, she noted the lack of her hood - damned bandits; she had made it herself - and her boots. "Hhhuuuuuh. No. What? Blast." Edging further towards him (not far, given the size of their enclosure), taking care to not knock over the candle, she glared harder at Fintan. "Who are you, where are we, and where is my hood?"

"Fintan, I don't know, and I don't know, in that order," Fintan said. He jerked his head towards his restraints and instantly regretted it as it made him throb with pain. "We're all sort of in the same boat right now though."
Fintan tried to take stock of what he knew and what he had. He'd been ambushed. Whatever conspiracy was out there, he wasn't close enough to anything solid to be a threat to anyone, much as he hated to admit it. They'd known where to ambush him as well. That meant they were almost certainly ambushing Heirah, as, with the right information, they could have known where she was planning to go... and know that she was supposed to have one of the Children of Power with her.
"All of that being said," Fintan continued. "You wouldn't happen to have recently developed the odd spot of magic, would you have?"

"It's that common?" she wondered out loud, turning her head slightly to get a glimpse of her shackles. "It's fairly recent, yeah. I don't suppose it's possible to use it when cuffed, is it?"

[OOC: I'll PM you the details on magic use later, both of you. For now, suffice it to say you have a one-foot-diameter ball of your Element you can conjure at will. No gestures or verbals are required and you can absolutely use it when cuffed - your character may, at your discretion, adopt gestures(etc) but that's merely a way for them to access it more easily. You *can* access more powerful magic but since you're both beginners, stick to that until I'm not busy]
Hairah began to stir, trying to move her arms and starting awake with a cry of pain as her injured arm (freshly re-injured by the bandits' clubs) jolted painfully.

The woman slipped her hands over her feet, breathing a sigh of relief as she finally relaxed her arms. "Ok. Magic. Magic, magic, candle? Magic candle." She frowned at the candle, then closed her eyes, seemingly annoyed. "That is a very stupid tiny candle. And the ceiling's not even wood. Not very considerate bandits."
