Verse One
Kairo, Jadyr, Ronan, Neko and Nemos found themselves drawn for various reasons to one particular inn in the city of Marstow. There, they quickly found themselves identified as wanted by the court mage Melasni and taken to the Governor's Palace. There, they met Melasni properly, along with the Governor's son Ekkhoen.
Melasni identified them as Children of Power, a subject he had been studying for some time, and told them of the legend of the Sanctuary. Supposedly it was a source of all nine Elements (impossible for two reasons: firstly, only people and Elementals are sources of magic, and secondly, nothing can use all nine at once due to the opposites involved) that arises when the Children of Power do. The group has no way of tracking it down even if it did exist, and Melasni sent them to the nearby village of Oakwood to check with a magical college there, that had been studying the legend. Ekkhoen sent one of his soldiers, Hairah, to defend the group.
When they got there, they realised Melasni had failed to mention the college being burned down and looted by bandits a month before they arrived. They found nothing of use, but did discover one mage had survived and fled. They tracked him to the city of Lundrig.
On the way, Kairo revealed a number of prophecies he has had for most of his life, written by someone called Niron. Nobody else could read them, although Nemos could read small segments. This is later revealed to be suspiciously similar to the two Elements' Full Powers - a Child of Water's prophecies can only be read in full by a Water mage; Ice mages can read only the parts of them that will come true. Nemos remembered that Niron was the previous Child of Water, who saw many different visions of the future and was driven insane by what he saw.
On the way, they met, saved, and befriended a trader from the city, a low-powered Fire mage named Roden. Once in the city they discovered he was blackmailing people and turned him in to the guard. They met a trader with the decidedly odd name of Alonzo Jack, who Roden had been blackmailing. Mr. Jack has promised them help if they ever need it. Following this, they tracked the survivor across the border to Aiwelleah. Hairah was unable to leave the country due to her military status; she turned back at the border and returned to Marstow.
Once in Aiwelleah, the group found and quickly dealt with a bandit camp, before realising that one by one, each of the nine Elements were being completely cut off. Not having a clue what to do, they investigated a nearby cult - only to find Melasni there and waiting for them, having infiltrated the cult before. With his help, they discovered the cultists were performing a ritual named Kendra's Disruption that was causing each Element to be cut off in turn over a few days. When completed, it would open a portal to the Old Domain (which can be basically summarised as hell itself).
The Children of Power were still injured from their fight at the bandit camp and could not afford to wait until they were healed. Nemos remembered that the Child of Energy would Burst with uncontrollable destructive Energy magic if pushed too far, and realised that he was about to do so. They did exactly that, and the cultists were swiftly vaporised - except Melani, who Jadyr never wanted to harm. Afterwards, Melasni left briefly, only to show back up with a new Child of Power, the Child of Fire Afreeti.
They discovered the Oakwood survivor had researched a place that's supposedly very reflective to Energy magic (the Energy Hub) and had left towards Ostran. The Children of Power went after him, with Melasni in tow as there was little he could do to help by going back to Marstow. They eventually tracked him to the Energy hub and rescued him; they used their various powers to invent the sauna and he felt a lot better, quickly coming to trust them.
The survivor, Jason, revealed some details the college had discovered about the Sanctuary legend before its destruction. Nemos realised from Jason's description that the Sanctuary was high atop a mountain in Rhewacoum - and that he had been staring right at it for most of his life.
The group journeyed to Wrackdene, purchased winter supplies, then travelled through Panest and into Rhewacoum. When they reached the base of the mountain, the party was split by a sudden and very fierce snowstorm. They all tried various tactics to stay warm and find their way back, and all failed - Nemos was immune to the cold, but still got completely lost. They were saved by Freezing Rain Elementals and taken to the Sanctuary, but Afreeti remained lost.
The Sanctuary proved to be as impossible as advertised, but nonetheless existed - being a source not only for the nine Elements, but for secondary, tertiary and quaternary Elements as well. As they explored, they found a magically enhanced bronze mirror; thanks to a very powerful spell, the previous Child of Metal, Meran, appeared in the mirror and advised the party to work out what's important and not to get distracted from it. The magic has since faded completely, but the party left the mirror intact.
Also in the Sanctuary, they found an odd piece of paper that seemed to be a source of every Element - this was the poem. Unable to make sense of it, they continued on their way. Nemos knew where the Ice Hub was thanks to his own research, and one of the Freezing Rain Elementals took him and Ronan there to fetch the Artifact before the whole group (except the still-missing Afreeti) returned to Marstow.
They had discovered the location of the Earth and Water Hubs; Jadyr, Nemos and Ronan went to the Earth Hub. In the Earth Hub, Ronan picked up a small stone and put it in his pocket. As everything in a Hub is an Elemental, he gained the immediate adoration of a tiny (level 4) Earth Elemental who came to be called Aron. Aron is currently residing in Ronan's hammer, or failing that in one of the stones in his pocket, and looks set to love him forever.
Meanwhile, the others went to the Water Hub, which took the form of a giant whirlpool. Kairo, Neko and Melasni went inside (the first two able to breathe due to their inherent abilities and Melasni owning a spell that gave him similar abilities). They found themselves in a bubble of still water under the whirlpool, and swam from bubble to bubble. They eventually found themselves in a bubble with a big water elemental and the Artifact Trident of Water; attacks were futile against it, so Kairo simply swam past and snagged the Trident. Melasni was thrown from the bubble by the Elemental, and vanished from sight with his breathing spell failing. The three returned to the boat and spotted him; the boat would not have reached him in time, so Kairo swam over to save him shortly before he drowned.
Afreeti was eventually found by a Freezing Rain Elemental shortly before she succumbed to hypothermia, even with her Fire magic giving her an innate resistance. Since everyone had already left, the Elemental took her to Marstow, where Melasni's apprentice took her in to look after her - and drugged her. She woke up in an underground prison cell and tried to pick the lock with a hairpin to escape, but due to some spectacularly bad luck she managed to break the pin in the lock and render it permanently unopenable. She was wearing a collar of Ice/Water magic that drowned her into unconsciousness if she tried to use any magic, so was stuck waiting for rescue.
The Water Hub team met Melasni's apprentice on the way to meet up with the others while they travelled through the Drylands towards Aiwelleah; he turned out to be a traitor and handed Melasni a booby-trapped item that exploded and nearly killed him. The apprentice did not survive for long.
Jadyr went off on his own from an inn 3 days east of (place I shall fill in later...). He wandered into a forest and got ambushed and kidnapped by persons unknown. The Water Hub team, on the way to his location, found a powerful, friendly Explosion Elemental who was more than happy to tag along with the Children of. Power. He was quickly named Flint and became a fast friend. The group found Jadyr drugged in a cult's camp shortly outside the village of Death Springs - he came around after being rescued. They depleted Death Springs' entire supply of bacon in one morning, then Jadyr went back to the cultists' camp, released his pent-up anger and Burst, destroying pretty much everything.
The two groups met back up in Aiwelleah; Ronan and Nemos are unsurprised that he wandered off and got captured. They were trying to track him but failed to follow the cult, so made their way to Aiwelleah to meet up with the others and form a plan. The group returns to discussing the poem, and eventually works out the Main Plot for Verse 1: three rituals being cast in tandem by three mages, each involving the sacrifice of a Child of Power. Afreeti is still in the hands of the cultists, Jadyr's cultists are very, very dead and won't be casting much of anything, and an unknown Child of Darkness is being held too.
They travelled towards Death Springs, around which the rituals are all being cast. On the way, they dealt with a Level 90(!) Lava elemental by virtue of running like hell and leaving it well enough alone.
Kairo, Jadyr, and Nemos rescued Afreeti and the four Children of Power sabotaged that ritual while Flint distracted the cultists - he was badly injured but survived, albeit severely weakened. The cultists returned and cast the sabotaged ritual, which detonated and destroyed them all. Worth noting: every cultist camp that has been encountered by Jadyr has been completely flattened. The others went to rescue the Child of Darkness but failed to save him - they were seconds too slow, and that ritual completed successfully.
The finished creature was much weaker than planned: the Energy ritual never took place, the Fire ritual backfired, and the Dark ritual completed so it appeared as a Dark Fire Elemental with Fire magic trying to destroy itself. It still would have easily defeated them, so they ran up to and annoyed the Lava elemental, then left the Elemental to its tender mercies. The fight was short but very fun to watch, and the first Verse of the Prophecy completed as the Elemental was destroyed.
Verse 1 NPC rundown
- Winters: a level 54 Water mage in Aiwelleah, close friends with the party
- Jason: a level 67 Energy mage, the survivor of the Oakwood college - slightly traumatised still, friend of the party, currently in a mages' college in the capital of the top-right country (north of Yal-Kash)
- Aron: the level 4 Earth elemental who adores Ronan.
- Flint: a level 21 Explosion elemental, currently wounded at an effective level of 3 from distracting the cultists while the Children of Power rescued Afreeti, residing in Jadyr's Artifact Sword gem
- Melasni: with the party, plans to go back to Marstow ASAP
- Ekkhoen, Hairah, and an escort of soldiers: currently in the capital of Yal-Kash, trying (failing) to negotiate peace
- Roden: the Lundrig trader the party had thrown in jail. Enemy of Kairo, Jadyr, Ronan, Neko and Nemos.
- The 3 mages casting the ritual: Melasni's traitorous apprentice, now dead. An unknown mage had kidnapped Afreeti; he died when his ritual was detonated. An unknown mage had kidnapped the Child of Darkness; he is alive and free to plot his revenge.
Verse Two
They returned to Aiwelleah; from there, Ronan and Melasni left to return to Marstow while Jadyr, Kairo and Nemos remained in the city. Unfortunately, a portal to the Old Domain opened shortly afterwards, killing many citizens and badly injuring Winters. Nemos was slain by the beast before it flew off, unharmed.
Meanwhile, the newly appeared Children of Darkness and Fire, were captured along with Hairah by bandits, shortly south of Lundrig. Ronan and Melasni rescued the group, although when he returned to search for clues he discovered every bandit had been slain by mysterious assassins, and the group fled to Marstow before finding any clues as to the bandits' identity. When they reached Marstow, they found an army from Panest, apparently allied with the city - but as they watched, it attacked.
