Sporking this thread from an earlier discussion that's currently unannouncementised. Also, we're keeping tables away from Kairo.

You might be, I'm not. Here, Kairo. course.shufe.edu.cn/jpkc/jrjlx/ref/StaTable.pdfPalimpsest is a word I quite like. I think the only place I saw it used was in the text adventure game Beyond Zork (which is awesome). I think they picked the word because it's uncommon enough it's harder to spell, and so they'd be able to show off the game's new ability to rename objects for easier use. There's also a pterodactyl in the game, and I'm convinced it's for the same reason.

For similar reasons, though nowhere near as useful, "Chaeselume." It's a made up word used as a password in Captive. Renowned for being one of the first procedurally generated games. The developer, an incredibly clever man, got over 300 levels of puzzle solving dungeons down to a few kilobytes of memory. Other gaming references, "Elbereth"... because writing that in the dust turned away monsters. And of course, for the German crowd... <<Danaudamshiffahrtcapitanswitwenversicherungspolice.>> I'm certain I misspelled that.

I'm pretty sure Elbereth, in the game, would itself be a reference to Lord of the Rings. It's one of the names Frodo invokes in Shelob's lair. I'm sure I read who it was in The Silmaralion, but I've forgotten because... I forgot almost every word of that book, and I've not been keen on re-reading. The guy at the bookstore advised I not even try to read it through and just use it as a reference, actually. Of course, for gaming words, there's the classic xyzzy. Which, apparently, is actually a mathematical mnemonic, which I did not know before.
Ailuranthrope is one I found myself needing recently. This seemed the place to mention it.

Ah Silmarillion. I got as far as the first chapter, after crawling through the introductory letter... I haven't picked it up again yet. I don't have any new words to add yet...

Silmarillion boiled down is a very long story anyway. You get an island of Elves dragged towards Middle Earth by one of the heroes. I forget which, but this was pre-Sauron, when Morgoth was the biggest threat and people lived several thousand years.

I thought some jerks from the Gondor type area tried to land on the elf promised land thing and take it over, and so... er... bad things happened to them, and the island wound up becoming the moon the world was made round. ... or something. That's what I got out of it. Also something about shiny trees.
