Elhon sighed and scribbled down a note reading "Appear to be digging. Suspect tunneling. Investigation incomplete, but at a temporary impasse" before folding up the note and sandwiching it between two pieces of silver, and returning to the tavern.
"Barkeep, another round, if you please," he said handing the man the coins, with the note tucked between.

The bar man placed a pint on the bar in front of him and scooped up both the note and coins. He discreetly read the note his face only flickering from impassive. He then reached into his pocket and placed the same coins as he'd recieved back on the bar in the guise of change.

Elhon scooped up the coins and nursed his pint. "Hey, know anything about that house? Next to the one across the way? Looking for a bit of work, thought maybe I could be someone's housekeeper. I tried nearby, by the owner said he had no need of a horse sleeper. You wouldn't happen to know when the owner would be home, would you?"

"Left or right? The one on the right is Gregor's, he might just not have heard you... Or he might be dead. He's getting on in the years and I haven't seen him in a few weeks. On the left is some antivan scholar can't prunounce the name... Azi something could just be out for the night but he does travel a lot... could be gone for months.

"Out for the night?" Elhon raised an eyebrow. "Do you know where he goes when he's out for the night? Should I check by the Pearl and see if they know if he'll be home tomorrow?"

"Your guess is as good as mine, he didn't seem the type though." He answered shrugging.

Elhon nodded, finished his drink, and headed out again, towards the Antivan scholar's house. He'd just have to chance it. He stopped by the front door, keeping a careful eye out, and keeping an ear open for the telltale sound of guards as he set about trying to get the lock on the door open, glancing at the upper story as he did so, looking for any windows between this house and the suspect house that were facing each other.

The house was the end of a long line of terraced houses connected at the wall. Elhon could hear voices from a few streets over but nothing within a dangerous distance. The lock popped open without to much trouble, the inside of the house was similar to the previous one he'd entered except for the decoration which was a bizar collection of maps, animal trophies, intricate art work and furniture that seemed to come from all over the continent. Another difference was the obvious trap door near the stairs.

Elhon hesitated. Trying to break through the wall to get into the house next door was probably a bad plan, but the trapdoor would allow him to get deeper into the house. And might allow for better hiding if the owner suddenly showed up. He slipped inside and closed the door quickly, before heading down the trapdoor.

It is pitch black beneath the trap door you cannot see a thing in there.

Elhon cursed lightly and closed the trapdoor, searching the house for some sort of lantern or a decent candle he could take down with him. He wasn't going to get anywhere stumbling around in the dark. Besides, one of the bar patrons had been spinning yarns about a sinister, lurking presence in the dark places of the earth. Its favorite diet is adventurers. Apparently, its insatiable appetite is tempered by its fear of light. An obvious tall tale, but thought of slavering fangs was hardly something Elhon wanted on his mind while he stubbed his toes on Maker knows what.

There were several lanterns around the room.

Elhon grabbed and lit one of them before proceeding downstairs again.

At the bottom of the ladder was a room lined with shelves and crates, this was clearly a storage area. The place was filled with books, equipment and one crate of wine near the ladder.

Elhon searched the room for anything of use, while again keeping an ear open for any sounds of digging from the neighboring house*

It would take hours to do a full inventory of the room, the books that cover shelves as well as being piled from floor to ceiling appear to have no focus or organisational system, there's a tome on Halla biology atop a brief history of bread making, underneath a compendium of the speeches of Fereldan monarchs, this appears to be the closest to a coherent grouping of books Elhon can find. The crates seem to contain an even less sensible assortment, blankets, pots, lanterns, statuettes are just some of the things poking from the top of the various crates. You get the impression that while nothing of excessive value seems to be stored here you could probably find something to suit any use you thought of. When he listened at the wall he could hear occasional faint murmurs if he remained totally silent but nothing else.

Elhon cast about for a glass, or better still, a funnel he could press against the wall to try and amplify the sounds he was hearing from the neighboring house.

Elhon quickly found a conveniently cone shaped vase which he immediately pressed to the wall to listen. After about a minute he heard someone speak. "Are they nearly done down there yet?" The voice was muffled but it sounded feminine. "They're- opening- could be another-" Another voice appeared this one deeper and more muffled as if further away, making it harder to distinguish the words. "Aw **** this is taking to long!" the first voice shouted the curse clearer than the rest of what he'd heard.

From the sound of it, Elhon reasoned that he had at least a little bit of time. He moved up, towards the attic of the house. When houses were joined like this, the roof was usually a single structure. Sometimes there was a firewall in the attic, to stop the spread of a fire from one house to the next, but sometimes not. Either way, a disturbance in that wall was likely to go unnoticed for some time.

The attic was remarkably empty, considering the state of the basement, there were beams crossing the low ceiling but Elhon easily manoeuvred himself to wall shared with the next house.

Elhon pulled his dagger and attempted to cut a small hole out of the shared wall, just enough to fit through.

Elhon failed to even make a scratch in what seemed to be a thick wooden wall. (OOC: crit fail)

Elhon cursed under his breath and looked around for any sort of rooftop access point in the attic.

There were none to be found, the only exit to the attic was the way he came in.

Elhon made his way back downstairs and started to search the house for any sort of adhesive, honey would do in a pinch, and a reasonably large sheet of vellum.
