[OOC: Actually, I was thinking five in total. One to set Nemos' self a-chill, and four spread over a long time to give the thing a heavy kick of power. Focus is control.]

"Nice to meet you Alyssa." His grin doesn't fade at all. "What are you doing up by the waterfall so late?" He's noticed now that it's around evening. "Any what did you try to do when you found me?"

The dagger quickly froze over and shattered, the Ice magic easily overwhelming Jadyr's much weaker dagger.
"I didn't do anything!" Alyssa's tone was instantly defensive. "I was just collecting pretty stones, and... and..." She sniffed, and her eyes filled with fresh tears. "I felt this magic! I was using my magic to calm down like Mummy told me, and..."
[OOC: Translation from upset-eight-year-old: She was doing a very similar thing to Kairo.]

Jadur would frown at the result "... i think you went overkill, Nemos... it's a dagger, not a full blown sculpture..." shaking his head... didn't the guy know anything about control? Isn't he supposed to be ice?

Frosting over, Nemos looks at the shattered dagger... and blinks, speaking at the same time as Jadyr. "Ja-" is as far as he gets.
"...Yes, of course. I wanted to know what would happen. Is there a way of unifying our magic pools and casting out of that?"

"Hey, hey..." Seeing a few dropped stones scattered around the girl's feet, he quickly picks them up and holds them out towards her.
"Your mummy seems like a very wise person. It looks like we both have something to learn about keeping our magic in check. To say sorry, I'll help you look for some pretty stones, then I'll walk you home, sound good?" He's kinda glad for the company, dealing with an eight year old girl is a welcome distraction. "I'll even let you in on a secret."

Nemos flicks a few shards of ice that had formed on his wrist, thinking things over. "I had a thought. If it's possible to use an artifact or gem to store magical power, it could be possible for one to store another's power. With such a unified font, it would be easy to *flick* a bit of magic in some direction or another. And realising that made me wonder if it's possible to hold magic in your hand. Displaced. Raw. And 'then' both or many start to cast."

[OOC: Since the dagger was pure magic, it would have vanished when the spell ended. Please fix, Thalslaw.]
The prospect of a secret had Alyssa intrigued, her tears forgotten. "What secret!? What secret!??"

Kairo sits down next to the girl. "Did your mummy ever tell you the story of the Children of Power? It's kind of an old story, but I think the old stories are sometimes the best ones. It's about these really powerful mages, one for each element. Fire, Wind, Water, Earth, Metal, Ice, Light, Darkness and Energy. A long, long time ago, before you, me or your mummy were born, the world was in danger from some really bad things, and nobody knew how to stop it. But then, the Children of Power came along, and fought off the bad things, and saved the world."
He looks over at her at this point. "And then, the Children of Power, they didn't go away. Well, they did, while the world was at peace, but they're supposed to return again when the world needs them." He places his trident across his knees, so she can see the sparkling blue diamond embedded in it.
"The secret is this. They've returned. And I think I might know one or two of them." He places his hand over the gem, feeling the flow of energy pulsing through the trident. "This thing here, is special. It's said that only the Child of Water can wield it." At this, he looks over at her and gives a gentle smile.

Jadyr would blink "so you mean take raw magic, and sorta merge them, then make the spell happen?" The old man can talk weird sometimes. you'd think a professor who knows a lot about magic would know this stuff already. Goes to show age does not equal wisdom.

"Yeah, that's the plan. Otherwise we end up mixing energy and ice. And I don't know quite what that turns into." Excited by the prospect of doing something like this, Nemos icy demeanour quickly evaporates to a warm puddle. You've seen it before as he's picked out new things upon which to experiment. A reserve of enthusiasm only tempered by success or failure that smooths the worry lines from his face and gives his lecturing, droning tones a more youthful vibrancy.

"I hope you know what you're doing" arching an eyebrow "i think it'd be a good idea to use the same amount of magic, too. It's about balance, right?" this attitude was different from the norm, Nemos sounded like he was alive for once!

The little girl's eyes were wide, and she nodded eagerly. "I wanna be a Child of Fire when I grow up!" she decided, her tears long forgotten. She held out a hand, and a tiny, tiny flame crackled into life on it. "See?"

"Yeah. At just more than cantrip level, let's balance it out; See what we can make when we merge ice and energy." Continuing his excited jabbering, Nemos chills a sphere of frost in front of him. He's still rimed with the ice from earlier, only seeming to come alive when something's there to cool his overactive brain. (OOC: 1pp, focus control.)

The child of energy would first of focus on seeing how much magic was being used before replicating similar power in his own hand, focusing on creating pure magic in his hand, small, controlled, focused magic. It's probably the most concentration on Jadyr's face that the party has seen from him.

While Jadyr's magic had been cast steadily and with perfect concentration - believe it or not - it was Nemos who had got distracted. Quite what thought had entered his head really did not matter as much as the end result of it. His own magic lanced out, stabbing wildly into Jadyr's small sphere, upsetting its balance enough for a lightning bolt to come arcing out and into Nemos's left foot - which instantly went completely numb, collapsing beneath him, and he went tumbling to the ground. "Feathers! Feathered ice can be used to make something slide one way and not any oth-" Jarring his head, the daft lecturer stops talking, aware he's causing a scene. He sighs. "I'm going to go to the room and practice. This idea just took over at the wrong moment. Now you see why I have to carry one of these around sometimes." He pats at the front of his pouch. It's obvious it holds a book.

Jadyr would just stare at the oddly behaving child of ice. The man confused him. however, once he recovered, he'd get up to fetch his sword from their room, opting to feed Flint more of his energy, channeling it into the gem where Flint resided

Seeing the girl's sincere glee at her control of the fire brought an honest smile to Kairo's face, but more than that, it brought him back, through his memories, to when he and Jadyr had first discovered Kairo could control water. It happened when he had been in the training hall in the village they had grown up in. Kairo was running through various martial arts exercises, moving through the stretches and forms. He had been moving slowly, centimetres at a time, meditating on what it was he was doing, what each individual muscle was doing, his breathing flowing with the moves. Trying to shut out all exterior disturbances, his eyes were closed, his sense of 'feel' heightened, his awareness acute and focused inside himself.
But when you have a brother like Jadyr, outside influences cannot always be shut out, even on the quietest of days. There was a shuffling noise, and out of nowhere, he felt a change in the air around his face, and instinctively shifted his stance a few inches to the left, as a large stone whooshed past where his head had just been. Smiling, he knew who had thrown it. This was a game for them. Another shuffling noise. Another shift of his weight, this time taking a step to the right.
Somewhere in the back of his mind, he heard the dripping of water, and unconsciously his mind clung to it, he knew not why at the time. The bowl of water on the windowsill, water dripping from the tiled roof into it. His breathing synchronised with the dripping of the water, every out breath timed to match the drip, and felt 'something'. Another stone, a bigger change in the air currents around him, a bigger stone? Kairo swung his arms around with a twist of his hips, bringing himself around and dodging again, but just barely. The stone clipped his left ear, painfully.
At that point, the surface of the water in the bowl had begun to rise, forming into a small ball. Neither of the twins noticed, though and as Kairo focused, now on external noise rather than internal, another stone began its arc towards him, aiming low this time. Kairo swung his arms in, the left hand sweeping around, finishing in front, palm down and level with the top of his ribcage, the right hand following it, and scooping under, coming to just above his navel, arms as if holding a sphere. He felt something, and opened his eyes. Floating in between his hands, was a ball of water, and in the centre of it, floating, was the stone...
Kairo was pulled from his thoughts by someone tugging on his sleeve, looking down, he saw the girl, her other hand still cradling the flames. "Sorry, just recalling old times" he said, still smiling. How some things had changed, yet some remained exactly the same. "Maybe one day, you might become a Child of Fire." His expression looked more thoughtful then than usual, "But enjoy the simple days while you can. Always remember them, and you'll be able to find a peaceful place, like this, to just... be." He laughed then, before standing up and offering his hand to the girl. A part of his mind still recalling the events of the past. (OOC: Hadn't intended on such a long post, it kinda just happened. Darky, if you want to tag along with the flashback, feel free.)

(OOC: sure, why not?)
As Jadyr poured magic into his gem for Flint, his mind wandered. he thought back to how they figured out Kairo was a mage. It was quite a day, and it was one where he was admittedly jealous at the time of Kairo.
after Kairo had caught the stone with the water, they stood staring, they had to rush off to show their parents, Kairo had magic! he could control water! they had to know! but what about Jadyr? He had spent the following days after that discovery pestering Kairo on how he did it. While Kairo did his best to help, Jadyr could not do so much as create a spark, or droplet of water, or anything. He knew very well he was jealous of Kairo, but he kept it to himself, did his best to keep it from affecting Kairo at all.
Thinking back, he was also grateful to their parents. While they were overjoyed to see Kairo's control of water, neither of them favoured him for it, and while they praised his accomplishments with magic, they always made sure to praise him for what he could do as well, particularly with his skill with sword wielding. From first hand experience Jadyr could say dual wielding is much harder than it looks, but he was stubborn to learn it as a kid. Partly to make up for the lack of magic, and partly because that's what had his attention- watching travellers who opted to stay at the local Inn practice and train on various trees near the village. Some ended up teaching him the basics, and Jadyr picked up the rest from there with their help and a lot of late nights (well, late by his parent's standards anyway).
coming out of that little memory, he'd look down at the gem where Flint was residing

Picking himself up from the floor, taking a while and a few false starts, Nemos begins making his way to the room. Ice having rimed over his body with the onset of sudden sweat from the pain he'd felt, onlookers would see him grow paler and paler. It's not just the growing thickness of crackling frost on his body, but also something happening inside his mind; so deep in his own thought, in his own revelations that he earns again his glacial title.
Even over his blue'd eyes, frost forms. It seems almost sibilant, how hairless skin on his hands drift over handrails and how the light touch of snowflake tipped fingers touch tables to judge distance more truly, putting onlookers in mind of a standing snake-like man; more so for his alien-seeming use of his lightning-struck leg.
The old teacher certainly doesn't look comfortable in his own skin as he finally settles his hand on the metal doorknob. His hand sticks. He peels his palm away.
And when the old man finally sits, he's completely in his own head. Flickers of expression pass his face, as though some vagrant and disturbing thought has just occurred to him. The Children of Power are disputational; the notion of agelessness, of children, removes almost all traces of seniority. They have to argue, debate and design when they get together and talk. Everyone else, all about acceptance of social norms and heirarchies. In which case, Nemos guesses Jadyr was the star pupil.
"But sudden wars are rare... they may not be intending to even pursue it seriously; an excuse to increase the amount of unity, to control the populace and siphon off what little freedoms and independence a cultist group could have. This war could even be in our benefit."
The dirge of thoughts continues as he starts to meditate... committing the thoughts to memory.

The girl's eyes were wide as she absorbed Kairo's words. She hesitated, then asked with all the naive sincerity of a child: "Am I allowed to burn my baby sister? Mummy says it's bad."
