"I'm not a soldier" Ronan shouted over his shoulder "right lets get going do we have horses?"

"We're travelling to Lundrig by river, and we'll borrow a pair of army horses from there." Melasni's tone made it clear the army would not necessarily agree with said borrowing, but that it would nonetheless happen. "There's no need to hire private horses from here to sit on a ferry."

"Fair enough" Ronan starts walking seeming fairly happy to travel in silence but not adverse to conversation. (OOC: do you intend to put the map in the info)

(OOC: You couldn't have waited five blasted minutes, could you? I was updating it! ) Melasni walked in silence, following one of the canals towards the docks. "Do you return for your country, or your wife?" he asked, rather abruptly after several minutes of silence.

"Both" he answers without pausing "If I had no one in Nishango, no family, no friends, no wife. I would still return, It is my duty. But if my country was safe and I knew my wife was in danger I would return just as quickly."

Melasni nodded with something that approached respect; clearly Ronan had given the right answer. "The war hasn't got past the border, from what I heard, but your wife's safety cannot be guaranteed in the country. Do you have any plans to protect her?"

"Not yet we will have to see the state of things when we arrive. The capitol is possibly the most secure but also the biggest target, I could send her to my parents in Heystock further from the border and not worth conquering but they have no defences to speak of, and then of course she could flee the country which would probably be the safe option but we would have to know if any nations will offer our refugees santuary.

Melasni nodded thoughtfully. "Keep her away from Melynmoir," he advised after a moment's silence. "There was tension with this country a short while ago. If things go even worse than they have been already, and it decides to join the war, it's unlikely to be on Nishango's side."

Admin Note: The "Stats" thread exists for things like that.
"Or Ostran, if you want to be extreme." Melasni's tone was level, but he was not seriously suggesting the island. "Panest would be far enough away from the fighting, I would imagine." He stepped ahead as they reached the docks, and spoke in a low tone with a boat owner about to depart. Coins exchanged hands, and he waved Ronan aboard.

(OOC: ) Melasni nodded and stepped aboard after him. He watched as the owner hurried about, apparently loading some barrels of some type of spice onto the boat. It was not really a cargo ship - it was many times too small for that - but apparently it served that function well enough for its owner. "I presume you'll be practicing your magic?" he asked after a moment. Clearly, the question was leading onto something.

"Yes I've been working on using it to give me an edge in combat for example using my arm and my magic to swing or helping to guide my hammer to its target once I've thrown it but I'm not having much luck."

Melasni nodded slightly. "Keep practicing," he advised calmly. "You will be the most powerful Earth mage one day." He gave a glance at the hammer. "Besides, I think your little pet's willing to help."

"I've been meaning to ask although you might not know only you've been in Marstow more recently than I have and when I did last return I didn't have time to check, but is Cpt. Holloway still in Command? Before I left he was planning to step down.

"He was when I left," he nodded. "From what I heard, he should be retiring any day now. Maybe he won't be able to, with the war." He shrugged slightly. "I never pay too much attention to the guard, they aren't really my concern."

"Exactly." Melasni appeared largely disinterested in the conversation, sorting through various small gems, many of them containing powerful spells. He appeared to be sorting his inventory, and did not say anything more.
(OOC: I'll start pulling encounter cards soon for the journey, if that's okay.)

Very little happened for most of the day - until at about six in the afternoon, with the autumn sun already sinking low in the sky, a shout from the boat's owner drew Melasni's attention. There was a sudden scrambling as the owner hurried to stop the boat as the way ahead was blocked by a rather large tree. There were many trees that clung to the river's bank, surviving in the scrubland only thanks to the water around - clearly, one of them had lost its grip and tumbled into the water.
